This week was a big week for Trail Mix. Last Thursday I traveled to downtown Cincinnati to Toby Keith’s new I Love This Bar and Grill for a concert. I got in contact with the artist, Ryan Broshear, through a friend. So I was able to get an exclusive interview before the show. He also gave me some merchandise to give away on the show this week. Ryan put on an amazing concert! He’s definitely going to be big in the country music realm very soon. You can purchase his album through iTunes, Amazon, and several other mediums. Check out his Facebook page, or on YouTube. Again his name is Ryan Broshear and you will definitely be hearing more about him. If you ever get the chance to see him live, do it! This week on Trail Mix I decided to try something new and have a featured artist for my show. The featured artist I chose was Alex Goot. I found him on YouTube and fell in love with his covers of popular songs. I had the opportunity to see him and another band that I found on YouTube, Boyce Avenue, on tour in Chicago, so I went. It was a great time and I was amazed by how good they sound live as well. You can listen to Alex Goot’s music on YouTube or buy it on iTunes.

Things at the station are going really well. News will be up soon, I’m looking forward to it. You are, too. I can tell.
I like going to B Dubs alone, but I don’t like talking to people I don’t know there. Life’s a bitch.
This week I’m going to talk about Joy Division. They’re one the best bands ever, and were very popular. Hell, they continue to be. They sell their stuff all over the place, they’ve been around for thirty years. There’s been 2 movies made about the band.
And yet no one really knows who they are. I mean, know them well. No one wants to. It’s depression music, sure, but it’s really damn good. I think people are just afraid. They think that if they listen to Joy Division then they’ll get depressed. Or maybe they’re just afraid to confront themselves.
Or maybe they’re just an intimidating band to listen to. Their covert art was pretty intense. It will be featured in the video below. You’ll see what I mean. It’s very morose without being generic and still being sincere.
It doesn’t help that Ian Curtis, the lead singer, killed himself at age 23. I’m 23. Ian Curtis killed himself at my age. It’s not a good way to relate to someone. People want to listen to Jay Z and pretend that they can relate to being famous. Then they pretend to be famous. In their head. It’s pathetic. It’s just as bad as relating to Ian Curtis. Actually, it’s worse. Ian Curtis was cooler than Jay Z. He was more talented, too. Actually, there’s nothing wrong with relating to Ian Curtis. There’s nothing wrong with pretending to relate to Jay Z, but relating to Ian Curtis is much more genuine.
Either way, you don’t have to KILL YOURSELF over it . LOL

This past week on my show, Trail Mix, I featured quite a few tri-state bands and musicians. They included: Robbie Tieman, Tommy Foertmeyer, Northland Noise, Walk the Moon, The Skallywags, Profoundly Yours, Bad Veins, and Cheyenne Marie Mize. Robbie is a local musician who attends NKU, he was the special guest on my show for last semester’s season finale. Walk the Moon is currently on tour opening up for more well-known artists. You should definitely check out these local artists, as well as others and support them in whatever ways possible. This coming week I will again feature music from several of these groups, and possibly a few new artists as well. As always, tune in every Thursday from 1-3pm to give your ears a break.

While job searching earlier today I thought I would stop by Phil’s records. I was nearby and I could ask Phil if he’s hiring while there, killing two birds with one stone. I found James Blood Ulmers freelancing on vinyl and a copy of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs Fever to Hell on CD., So it was a good hunt. When I was at the register I asked Phil about a possible job, and he gave me the same answer record stores all across America are giving. “I’m not making enough revenue to bring on other workers.” It’s a subject that’s rarely talked about in the regards to illegal downloading. I myself feel no sympathy for artist whose music is stolen. If there truly worthy of their fans then they can make up the lost revenue in touring merchandising and other sources. Take the Black keys for example, it’s impossible to turn on a TV without hearing one of their songs in a commercial or trailer. As far as I am concerned the real losers in the digital music age are the local record shops.

Anyone who’s ever spent more than five minutes in Louisville is familiar with it. The store first opened in 1985 and has been a land mark ever since. The Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D, My Morning Jacket, and Cage the Elephant to name a few, have all performed within the store. I dare you to walk down Bards Town in Louisville without seeing an ear X-tacy bumper sticker. Yet as popular as it seems the shop had its last open days this past November, and I fear the same fate for Phil’s and other shops a like. There’s no telling when record shops will finally vanish from American culture but I hopes its later than sooner.

Happy New Year! I’m Jeffonia “Ms. Ebony J” Wynn, the General Manager of norsecoderadio.com. I have been working with NCR for four years now and it is a pleasure to lead the station. Since the age of 4, I have been in love with radio. I graduated from Hughes Center with a major in communications; I’ve worked with Radio One Cincinnati and WCPO. I plan to incorporate everything I’ve learned into norsecoderadio.com. As the general manager, I plan to increase the listenership of the station as a whole, help brand the station as the campus radio station, and help prepare the dj’s to work in the broadcasting field when they graduate. I am blessed to have this opportunity and look forward to a wonderful semester.
